1. Based on the power source, there are six main types of winches:
Electric winches are the most common. They rely on the vehicle's own electrical system to power the winch. Advantages: They can be used even if the vehicle is stalled, making them unmatched by other winches. This is particularly advantageous in areas with high water content. They are easy to install, allowing for multiple locations and quick relocation.
PTO winches use the transfer case's output power as their power source. Advantages: They can provide sustained, high pulling force, a long single-use duration, and multi-directional pulling force, making them an excellent choice for military vehicles or serious high-performance off-road vehicles. Disadvantages: They require engine power, meaning they cannot be used if the engine is disabled due to flooding or if the transfer case loses directional driving force.
Hydraulic winches use the vehicle's power and power steering system as their power source, using a power steering pump as their source power. Advantages: They are easy to install. Since their external mounting parts are essentially universal, they can even be interchanged in the field. Their driving force is between that of electric and PTO winches, and overheating is extremely rare.
A wheel winch is a relatively new winch system that uses the wheel axle as the driving force. It uses four of the six screws on most off-road wheels to secure the winch. Advantages: Extremely easy installation and removal, extremely lightweight, affordable, and capable of providing bidirectional pulling force.
A manual winch is powered by manual longitudinal or circular motion. Due to the limitations of human effort, manual winches generally have limited pulling force.
A pneumatic winch shares the same design and operating principle as a hydraulic winch, but uses compressed gas instead of compressed liquid.
2. Based on their application, they can be categorized as ATV winches, off-road winches, truck winches, and industrial winches. Depending on the specific industry, there are also waterproof and explosion-proof winches.
